history

In 1857 Salomon Spitz founded the sole proprietorship S. Spitz in Linz- Urfahr and began producing spirits. In 1935 another production facility was opened in Attnang-Puchheim and the range was expanded to include fruit juices and syrups.

In 1938 the company was Aryanized . The owner of the company and grandson of the founder, Viktor Spitz, fled to the United States . During the National Socialism , the business was run down and looted. In the Soviet occupation zone, in which Urfahr was after 1945, it was difficult to restart operations. In 1945 Walter Scherb was appointed managing director. After the war years, this began with the reconstruction from scratch. A hot beverage and other surrogates were made as the first products , as there were no raw materials for spirits and other products.

When Viktor Spitz traveled back from the United States in 1949 to sell the company, there were only low bids among those interested. In 1952 it was finally sold to Walter Scherb, who had been running the business since 1945, and in 1953 it was converted into a limited partnership. He was later followed by his son Walter as the owner.

Spitz only had one employee left, but Walter Scherb I. quickly gathered people around him and procured the necessary raw materials. At the end of the 1940s, Spitz already had 50 employees. Before the war, Spitz was a successful company across Austria, especially with spirits and syrups. Walter Scherb I. put the company on a new footing and created a stable basis.

With the fall of the demarcation lines in 1955, sales were quickly expanded to all of Austria and Spitz became the market leader in the spirits and fruit juices sectors. In 1970, Spitz became a limited company. In the 1970s, the company expanded the product range and began producing jams, mustards, mayonnaise and ketchup. A few years later the range was expanded to include baked goods such as cakes, biscuits and waffles.

In 1989/90 his own bread factory was set up and Spitz began producing bread and confectionery. Walter Scherb II was appointed managing director in 1992. In 1994, Spitz launched Power Horse, its own energy drink, which was particularly successful internationally.

In 2006, PET to PET Recycling GmbH was founded, which enables the ecological recycling of PET bottles. An aseptic filling system for PET bottles and a new can filling system were put into operation.

In 2007, Spitz took a 51% stake in Gasteiner Mineralwasser GmbH , based in Bad Gastein (Salzburg). In 2019 the remaining 49% was taken over by Brau Union .

BioWärme Spitz GmbH has been ensuring supplies based on renewable raw materials since 2008. With the start-up of BioWärme, Spitz's internal energy requirements will be met in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner and local heating will be provided for the Attnang-Puchheim area.

In 2013, Spitz acquired Auer-Blaschke GmbH & Co KG from the Dutch company Continental Bakeries in order to bring traditional Austrian desserts back to Austria and to develop them again.

The company Honigmayr , which is based in Werfen and has been producing various honey products since 1920, has also been part of the group since 2019 .

Auer-Blaschke

On August 1, 2013, Spitz took over the confectionery manufacturer Auer-Blaschke from the baking company Continental Bakeries . Auer-Blaschke emerged from the merger of the Blaschke bakery, founded in 1902, and Auer, founded in 1920, in 1997.In 1998, Auer-Blaschke was taken over by Continental Bakeries and is the manufacturer of the Blaschke coconut domes , Auer cake corners , Auer tree trunks and ice cream cones at the age of 60 Employees. The original Blaschke coconut dome is a creation by Johann Blaschke from 1921 and has been made according to an unchanged recipe since then. Auer cake corners were created by Rudolf Auer in 1922. The Auer and Blaschke brands continued to operate independently even after the takeover. At the beginning of 2018 it was announced that Auer-Blaschke was moving its production from Spillern to the headquarters of its parent company Spitz in Attnang-Puchheim, and the plant in Spillern is to be closed.

Locations

Since 1935 - after Linz-Urfahr before - the company's only core manufacturing location has been in Attnang-Puchheim .

At the oldest location, in the center of Linz-Urfahr, Fiedlerstraße 6, Spitz now runs the Spitz Hotel , equipped with design and art, in addition to parts of the administration .
