SBB Historical Heritage Foundation
The SBB Historical Heritage Foundation ( French: Fondation pour le patrimoine historique des CFF ; Italian: Fondazione per il patrimonio storico delle FFS ) with the brand name SBB Historic is a foundation under private law with its headquarters in Erstfeld UR and an office in Windisch AG . The foundation collects historically valuable goods and files from Swiss railway history and makes them accessible and usable to a broader public.
The foundation wants to collect, preserve and conserve historical objects related to rail transport in Switzerland , as well as inform and document them.
history
Shortly after it was founded, the Swiss Federal Railways planned to build a railway museum in order to make the existing historically valuable vehicles and other railway objects accessible to the public. After lengthy discussions, a small railway museum was opened in 1918 in the service building of the Zurich freight yard on Hohlstrasse. As became apparent interest in a national transport museum in the 1950s, also SBB involved in the planning and finally brought the groupage on loan to the club of Transport of Switzerland one. The Verkehrshaus in Zurich was originally planned, but no suitable location could be found. That is why it was finally opened in Lucerne in 1959 .
The maintenance and maintenance of the functionality of the vehicles was mainly the responsibility of the main railway workshops and locomotive depots of the SBB. There, the locomotives and wagons were maintained by the workshop staff and the train drivers, in some cases free of charge.
The transformation of SBB into a stock corporation in 1999 initiated a far-reaching restructuring process. In the course of concentrating on core competencies and cost optimization, SBB established the private law foundation “Historic Heritage of the SBB”, or “SBB Historic” for short, in 2001 and outsourced the goods to it.
In 2015, SBB Historic von Bern moved into the building of the former SBB materials warehouse on the south side of Brugg train station .
