SD-14 is a Liberty replacement ship type , which was developed by the Austin & Pickersgill shipyard in Southwick , Great Britain in the 1960s as a replacement for the then aging fleet of Liberty freighters and Victory ships and was built until the end of the 1980s. The designation SD-14 of this type, which was built 211 times over the course of two decades, stands for Shelter-Decker 14,000 tons . The ships had five hatches with a volume of 21,424 m³ (bulk cargo) and 19,648 m³ (general cargo). Ten cargo booms with 5/10 tons and one or two heavy lift booms with 30 tons were available as their own loading gear.

history

In the mid-1960s, around 700 of the Liberty and Victory standard freighters and a few other cargo ships built during World War II were still in service in the world merchant fleet of that time. Even the youngest of them were now 20 years or older, and so both the shipping companies and the shipyards were faced with the question of replacing these ships, which would soon reach the end of their service life.

An SD-14, passing Hong Kong

The great upheavals in maritime shipping, caused by the appearance of container ships and bulk carriers , which would later almost completely replace the general cargo ships , were not foreseeable as such at this point in time, so that the classic general cargo ship , which was in its form at the time since the turn of the century, was relatively few changes was built, still appeared up to date. It was therefore not surprising that Austin & Pickersgill, like many other shipyards with their successful type ships German Liberty , Trampko , Seebeck 36L , Freedom and Fortune , turned to intermediate decks in their plans to replace the Liberty and Victory ships oriented with its own loading gear and approx. 14,000 tons load capacity. This conservative design was undoubtedly also due to the fact that most of the Liberty and Victory ships still in service at that time were operated by rather small shipping companies with limited resources. In this context, Basil M. Mavroleon, the Greek-born chairman of the main owner of A&P, the shipping company London and Overseas Freighters, who maintained good contacts with Greek shipping circles, had a great influence. The focus of the shipyard was on precisely these small, often Greek shipping companies, for which at the time it was difficult to finance new builds of a completely new or significantly larger type of ship , such as the Blohm & Voss shipyard with its Pioneer type would be.

An SD-14 at sea

In the early stages, A&P also invited other British shipbuilders to apply for SD-14 building licenses if they met the requirements, which included keeping the selling price per ship below £ 915,000, which initially only included the neighboring Bartram's shipyard saw the location.

The Nicola , the first ship of this type, was laid down on June 8, 1967 at Austin & Pickersgill. The first launching of an SD-14, the Mimis N. Papalios , however, took place on December 1, 1967 from the "South Dock" of the shipyard Bartram & Sons , also located in Sunderland , which built the ship under license. On February 14, 1968, Austin & Pickersgill completed the Nicola, the very first SD-14, with the Mimis N. Papalios also being finished a day later at Bartram's. The 100th order was already registered on April 6, 1971. The last ship of this series was the Tucurui launched in Niteroi / Brazil at CNC Estaleiro Mauá on December 22, 1983 . However, it was not completed until June 22, 1988.

The majority of the SD-14 ships were built at Austin & Pickersgill, where at times two ships of this type were completed per month. As expected in the early phase of the project, the main customers were Greek shipping companies. A total of 211 SD-14s were completed between 1968 and 1988. Like the original Liberty and Victory ships, many of which initially thought would be scrapped once the war ended, many SD-14 ships also had long careers and were in ports until the early 2000s, mostly in ports Asia and South America regularly, still to be found in considerable numbers.

Trivia

Due to the extremely simple design of the construction in connection with the extremely widespread use of this type of ship, the SD-14 freighter was often referred to as the Plain Jane , in German about gray mouse .
