The Svenska damhockeyligan (SDHL, between 2008 and 2016 Riksserien ) is the highest Swedish women's ice hockey league . It has been run by the Swedish ice hockey association Svenska Ishockeyförbundet since 2008. Previously, the Swedish champions were determined in a final tournament, for which teams from three regional competitions could qualify. In order to raise the level of play compared to North America, the Riksserien was introduced in January 2008, a national top division in which the two best teams in the north and south divisions and the four best teams in the east division were included. Below the Riksserien, the Allettan emerged , between the two leagues at the end of the season a qualification called the Kvalserien takes place.
For the 2015/16 season, the Riksserien was increased by two teams to a total of ten teams. In 2016 the Riksserien was renamed Svenska damhockeyligan and transferred to a new operating company.
