history

The club goes back to FC Gronau 09 , which was founded on July 16, 1909 . This formed a team from 1913 to 1919 together with the footballers of TV Gronau, which was founded in 1887 . The second parent club was the DJK Concordia Gronau, founded in 1921 . Three years later, FC Phönix Gronau and SC Union Gronau were founded , and in 1928 they merged to form the Gronau game association . In 1933 the DJK Concordia and the game association merged to form the railway game association Concordia Gronau . Finally, in 1954, FC Gronau 09 and the Concordia Railway Game Association merged to form today's SG Gronau.

FC Gronau 09 was one of the strongest teams in western Münsterland , especially in the 1920s . In 1920 he was promoted to the top division of the time and was third in the promotion season of 1920/21 behind Preußen Münster and Viktoria Recklinghausen . From 1924 the FCG played in the single-track Gauliga Westfalen and played against well-known opponents such as Arminia Bielefeld and VfL Osnabrück . In terms of sport, the Gronauers fought against relegation and had to return to the second division in 1926 and made it back up five years later. The qualification for the newly created Gauliga Westfalen was missed in 1933. Two years later it even went back to the third division.

After the end of the Second World War , FC 09 played with average success in the Emsland district class . There, the team initially fought with numerous local rivals for inner-city supremacy. In 1954, FC Gronau 09 achieved the best placement of this era with third place behind SpVg Emsdetten 05 and Preußen Borghorst . After the season there was a merger with Concordia to form today's SG Gronau.

SG Gronau

The merger was a success. In the first season after the merger, they were promoted to the state league , which was the highest amateur league in Westphalia at the time. As the table sixth in the 1955/56 season, the Gronauer qualified straight away for the newly created Association League Westphalia , where the team was seventh in the 1956/57 season . The highlights of the season were a 4-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld and an 8-2 win against VfR Marl-Hüls . A year later the SG was twelfth and beat Borussia Lippstadt 8-0. Finally, in 1959 , the team had to return to the state league as the penultimate, and two years later they were relegated to the district class.

Only in 1968 succeeded after a playoff victory over Borussia Rheine the promotion to the national league. Five years later, the SG was relegated and immediately rose again. After only one year, the SG had to relegate from the state league again in 1974 and the club began a sporty decline. In 1977 the club was relegated from the district class and two years later it went down to the Ahauser district league B. The SG Gronau then became the elevator team between district league A and district league B. In 1998, the Gronau had the chance to rise again to the district league. The play-off against FC Epe with equal points was lost 0: 1.

In 2007 SG Gronau was promoted to the district league. Two years later the team became autumn champions and finished fourth at the end of the season. In 2011, the team was relegated from the district league and was passed through to the district league B in the following 2011/12 season. It was not until 2018 that he was promoted again, followed a year later by immediate relegation to the district league B.
