The Swedish steam locomotive type L (II) was a series for heavy passenger train service on the main lines in the north of Sweden.

history

SJ L 966, factory picture Falun, 1908

Between 1904 and 1906 and 1908, 47 wet steam locomotives with twin engines with a 1'C wheel arrangement were procured for heavy passenger train traffic in northern Sweden . The deliveries were made by the Swedish locomotive factories Nydqvist och Holm , Motala Verkstad , Nya AB Atlas and Vagn- & Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Falun .

The locomotives had a Krauss-Helmholtz bogie and a Helmholtz - slide . The locomotives 795–799, 804–823 and 844–845 originally had open driver's cabs . In order to operate the locomotives more economically, superheaters were installed between 1910 and 1922 .

Some locomotives were with the great Wagner - skirting fitted. While the locomotives were in operation, tests were carried out with oil firing .

Application area

The series was primarily used for express and passenger trains on the main lines in northern Sweden. Because of their low weight, they were also used on the Västkustbana , since the viaducts in Helsingborg and Gothenburg could not be used by the heavier locomotives of the early 1900s.

After the electrification of the main lines, some of the L locomotives were used on branch lines and on nationalized former private railways. At the end of the 1950s, most of them were taken out of regular service, some of them remained as standby locomotives . When the emergency locomotives were abolished in 1970, all locomotives were scrapped.

SJ La

Locomotive 818 was equipped with an Anderberg smoke chamber superheater from 1924 to 1932 and was operated separately as the SJ La series during this time . After dismantling, it was in service in Kiruna until 1960 , where it was scrapped as a standby locomotive until 1970 and 1972 in Vislanda.
