SM UC-5 was a submarine of the Imperial Navy of type UC , which in the First World War was used.
Calls
UC 5 was relatively successful because it sank 29 ships with a tonnage of 36,288 tons in 29 missions.
Whereabouts
On April 27, 1916, UC 5 ran onto a sandbank at Shipwash Shoal and was stuck at low tide ( 51 ° 58 ′ N , 1 ° 38 ′ E ). The crew destroyed the secret documents on board. Commander Mohrbutter reported the incident to Seebrugge by radio . The radio message was listened to by the British and the destroyer Firedrake was ordered to go to the said sandbank. When the British warship was sighted, Mohrbutter ordered the evacuation of the submarine and the preparation of the explosives for self- sinking . However, since the explosive charges did not detonate as intended, the self-destruction failed. All 15 crew members survived. UC 5 was later salvaged by the British and used as an advertisement for war bonds .
