Saúl Ubaldini

Saúl Edólver Ubaldini (born December 29, 1936 in Buenos Aires , † November 20, 2006 ibid) was an Argentine trade union official and politician of the Peronist Party .

Life

Ubaldini was born in Mataderos , a district of Buenos Aires, the son of a butcher and a seamstress. As a worker in the processing industry, he soon came into contact with trade union organizations . In 1969 he took a job in a small yeast factory and in 1972 became general secretary of the small union of beer industry workers (Federación Obrera Cervecera Argentina). During the time of the military junta , he was elected General Secretary of the Confederación General del Trabajo de la República Argentina (CGT), the umbrella organization of the trade unions, in 1979. In the following years he was the leader of the so-called “Brazil Group” within the trade union federation, which, in contrast to the so-called “Azopardo Group”, pursued a tougher and more critical stance of the unions towards the military junta . In this capacity, he led a demonstration of 10,000 protesters against the dictatorship in 1981 , the first mass protest of the time, and was subsequently arrested.

After the return of democracy in Argentina , he was elected chairman of the CGT in 1986. In this capacity he led 13 general strikes against the government of the Unión Cívica Radical led by President Raúl Alfonsín . In addition, he was at times also vice president of the social-democratic oriented International Association of Independent Trade Union Organizations (Confederación de Organizaciones Sindicales Libres Internacional (CIOSL)).

When Carlos Menem, a politician of the Peronist Party, became the new president in 1989, the CGT's willingness to strike decreased. Despite his support for Menem in the election campaign, Ubaldini was replaced as chairman of the CGT in 1989 by a henchman Menem. In the following years he was therefore an opponent of Menem's economic reforms and refused to leave the CGT building.

In 1993 he ran for the office of governor of the province of Buenos Aires . However, he suffered a heavy defeat against Menem's close confidante, Eduardo Duhalde . In 1997 he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies (Honorable Cámara de Diputados de la Nación) , where he represented the interests of the Province of Buenos Aires after his re-election from 2001 to 2005 and in particular supported the ideas and programs of Planning Minister Julio de Vido . During this time he was, among other things, chairman of the parliamentary committee for labor and advocated an increase in salaries, pensions and pensions.
