Sabal mexicana is a species of the genus Sabal within the palm family (Arecaceae).

Vegetative characteristics
Sabal mexicana grows as a palm and reaches heights of 12 to 18 meters, a crown diameter of 3 to 4 meters, a trunk length of 12 to 15 meters and a trunk diameter of up to 30 centimeters. With a width of 1.5 to 1.8 meters, the fan-shaped fronds merge into 90 to 120 centimeters long stingless petioles.
Generative characteristics
The annual inflorescences are 1.2 to 1.8 meters long. The threefold flowers are hermaphroditic. The black when ripe stone fruits have a diameter of about 12 millimeters.
Occurrence
The distribution area of Sabal mexicana extends from southernmost Texas over Mexico on the Gulf Coast and Nayarit further to the Pacific Ocean and on both coasts, south to Nicaragua . There is an assumption that the distribution area used to reach into. It is one of the most widespread palm species in Mexico , where it is found in arid valleys.

Due to its grandeur, its drought resistance and its frost tolerance of up to −12 ° C, it is used as an ornamental plant. Their wood is resistant to rot and shipworms and is therefore well suited for the construction of quay and fence posts . The fronds are processed into thatched roofs . The fruits and the palm heart are eaten.
