The passenger ship Sachsenwald is a coal-fired former screw tugboat that travels the Elbe in Saxon Switzerland and Bohemian Switzerland . During the season it is located at a pier on the right bank of the river in the city of Wehlen .

history

The steamer was built in 1914 at the Gebr. Wiemann shipyard in Brandenburg an der Havel and put into operation under the name Ida-Erna . The ship was mainly used as a tug. The main areas of application were the Elbe from Hamburg to Berlin and the Brandenburg waterways and the Oder . In 1972 the ship was decommissioned.

In 1980 it was taken over by the current owner, “Personenschiffahrt Oberelbe”, in a neglected condition. In 1985 it received the status of a technical monument . In 1990 it was repaired and converted for its new purpose as a passenger ship. In 1991 it was put back into service under the name Sachsenwald . Since then it has served the seasonal scheduled and charter traffic on the Upper Elbe. The steamer was rented to Haveldampfschifffahrt Potsdam from 1995 to 2000 and was used on the Havel.

Since the draft of the ship made sailing on the Upper Elbe difficult or even impossible in the arid summer months, the ship was lengthened to 30.5 m in 2004 at the Laubegast shipyard in Dresden - Laubegast by adding a 5 m long middle section. This improved the buoyancy of the ship and therefore reduced its depth to 30 cm to a maximum of 1.00 m, which rides on the upper same even at a low water level of 1.50 m Dresden level possible. However, the reduced draft also meant that the propeller and the nozzle initially came too high out of the water, which impaired speed and maneuverability. This problem was solved by flooding the rear ballast compartment, which created the necessary draft at the stern and lowered the propeller sufficiently deep into the water.
