Sacrosanct is a thrash metal band from the Netherlands , founded in 1988 by two former members of Pestilence and disbanded after three albums in the mid-90s. The re-establishment took place in 2016, including a stylistic reorientation towards Progressive Metal .

Band history

Founding phase until Truth Is - What Is

Sacrosanct was founded in 1988 by guitarist Randy Meinhard and drummer Marco Foddis, who met at Pestilence . Shortly thereafter, the band was completed by singer Michael "Mike" Lucarelli, Milan Nyitrai (bass) and Michael Cerrone (guitar). Foddis soon got out and was replaced by Ronny Scholten.

In 1990 they released their debut album Truth Is - What Is with Remco Nijkamp, who had joined Nyitrai , which was produced by Charly Rinne and Stefan Josefus in the Franz “K” recording studio in Witten . The album is characterized by technically demanding Thrash Metal. The two guitars create a straight and at the same time spherical and melodic soundscape, which is broken up by the hard, precise drumming and the accusing, sometimes angry and rough voice of Michael Lucarelli . Randy Meinhard emphasized guitar duos from bands like Queensrÿche , Exodus or Iron Maiden as influences ; As an initial influence he named Ace Frehley von Kiss .

“The record contains about as many riffs as all Slayer discs put together,” summarized the later publisher Holger Stratmann in Rock Hard magazine , and awarded seven and a half out of ten possible points. But although the album was so well received, it could not reach a wider public, because the record company No Remorse Records suffered from financial difficulties and eventually went bankrupt, despite well-known acts in the repertoire such as Blind Guardian , Heavens Gate or Grinder .

Recessions for the depraved

The band signed a new record deal with 1MF Records and made a number of line-up changes. With Gerrit Knol (guitar), Christian Colli (bass) and Haico van Atticum (drums), the second album Recesses for the Depraved was created in 1991 in the Dust Music Studio in Hilchenbach . Like the debut, it received seven and a half points out of ten in rock hard . Frank Trojan raved about the "powerful, brutal production".

It was less melodic and spherical than the debut, but with the introduction to the last piece, The silence of being, already indicated the transition to the later, more progressive , but also darker style. The stylistic change is also evident on the song Mental reincarnation , which was recorded with Mike Lucarelli, but only appeared on the 2018 remastered re-release of Recesses for the depraved . Elements of this song can be found in the song Shining through on the follow-up album Tragic Intense .

"We developed as a band, had new members, and it was my wish to make the album sound darker but still thrashy ," said Randy Meinhard later. There was no commercial progress, although the new label drew attention to the album with advertisements in major heavy metal magazines and the rights to Hansruedi Giger's work Das Spiegelbild could be obtained for the cover . On the occasion of Giger's death 23 years later, Rolling Stone magazine noted that the image "accurately transports the wild nature of music".

Tragic Intense

After Recesses for the Depraved there were new line-up changes, Randy Meinhard finally crystallized out as a constant in the band, who was also responsible for all the songs. Gerrit Knol left the band as did Michael Lucarelli, who Ronny Scholten joined at Genetic Wisdom . The brothers Michael (guitar) and Collin Kock came for the two. Randy Meinhard later said: “It was certainly difficult for me because Michael was a very good friend. On the other hand, it became apparent that his voice was perfect for the songs on the first two albums, but no longer for the new songs we were composing at the time. "

Since Collin Kock, unlike Lucarelli, also mastered plain vocals, the album Tragic Intense was even more melodic and spherical than the debut. Staccato passages , on the other hand, are rarely found on it. In the magazine Iron Pages (4/93) Randy Meinhard remarked that the dark mood of the album was “ what we wanted to achieve. (...) It should just be gloomy ”. In the same issue of Iron Pages, Markus Wosgien described tragic intense as a “ mixture of Thrash , Doom and Power Metal ” and called it a “ milestone in this category ”. In Rock Hard , Frank Albrecht gave nine out of ten points and wrote: “ Tragic Intense turned out to be extremely Doom-heavy without being a pure Doom album. The disc lives from its sluggish and apocalyptic atmosphere, from the heavy riffs, the melancholy melodies. And of course the atmospheric vocals of the new front man Collin, who brings a very idiosyncratic organ. "

The opener At Least Pain Lasts , a sung suicide note from a suicide should be overly prophetic. The album was not followed by any further publications. Some time later the group broke up.

Reunification from 2016 and Necropolis

In 2016 Randy Meinhard, Collin Kock and Michael Kock began to work on the remasters of old songs with the intention of releasing them in the course of 2017 and 2018. On May 13, 2017, Randy Meinhard also announced a complete new album on Facebook called Necropolis . Both are to appear on the record company Vic Records , which released albums by Sinister , Infernäl Mäjesty and Assorted Heap , among others . A quarter of a year later, the band announced a contract with Morton Studios to record an album. New to the group were the former Sphere of Souls bassist Kees Harrison, singer Richard F. Hesselink, guitarist Christian Göwert and drummer Jonas Schütz. They contributed to new songs like The New Age of Fear , My Last White Light and Only One God , which were recorded between August 2016 and December 2017.

Necropolis was published on November 30th, 2018. In the December issue of Rock Hard magazine , Ronny Bittner awarded 7.5 out of 10 points and commented: "The melodic approach and the prog touch have remained, but musically you don't go very slowly anymore gloomy like on “Tragic Intense.” Most of the tracks move in mid-tempo and are given a certain amount of melodrama by the singing of new singer Richard F. Hesselink, which fortunately the band does not underpin with excessive keyboard use Timo Pässler rated Necropolis 10 points for Stalker Magazine and wrote: "The songs, all of which are in classic heavy metal, radiate a certain maturity. The band's focus is on the riffs that carry the songs. Add to this the pleasantly rough, but still melodic vocals of Richard F. Hesselink. "Several reviewers compared the voice of Richard F. Hesselink with that of James Hetfield .

In May 2020, Sacrosanct announced the separation of Hesselink and Harrison as well as the new members Mario Berendijk (bass) and Ron Brouwer (vocals), after the former bassist Gerrit Knol had already returned as the second lead guitarist for Christian Göwert.
