Sageretia are evergreen or deciduous, reinforced or unreinforced shrubs or small trees. They are seldom climbing plants, thorns are used for climbing, which actually represent modified inflorescence axes. The leaves are alternate or almost opposite.

The tiny, sessile flowers stand as glomeruli in terminal or axillary, spike-shaped thyrses . The flower cup may be missing or it may be short and bell-shaped to bowl-shaped. The thin to fleshy disc , occasionally fused with the flower cup, is ring-shaped to cup-shaped. The ovary is on top. The fruits are more or less fleshy stone fruits with two to three stone pits. The endocarp is extremely hard and incompletely single or double.
