. Sahag (Isaac) II Maschalian ( Western Armenian Սահակ Բ Մաշալեան in which ostarmenischen transliteration Sahak Maschaljan * 17th March 1962 as Şahin Masalı in Bayrampaşa , Istanbul Province ) is an Armenian - Turkish preacher of the Pentecostal movement and since December 11, 2019 85. Patriarch of Constantinople of the Armenian Apostolic Church .

Maschalian grew up in the Islamic- conservative prefabricated building district of Bayrampaşa, where numerous Albanian and Bosnian immigrants from the Balkans live. Maschalian's grandmother, who survived the Armenian genocide , came from eastern Anatolia and found refuge in Bayrampaşa. However, her fifteen year old brother was killed during the genocide .

While studying electrical engineering and communications at the Istanbul Technical University from 1979, a friend of Maschalian got him a Bible from the Turkish Bible Society, so that he came across the Protestant Pentecostal church in Istanbul, Nehir Kilisesi , near the university . Maschalian learned Armenian at the age of 20 and began to preach. The then Patriarch Schnork Kalustjan allowed him to do this at an Armenian-Apostolic (Oriental-Orthodox) youth service and convinced him to bring his evangelical concern to the large Armenian-Apostolic Church. From 1982 Maschalian broke away from the Istanbul Technical University and devoted himself to the faith. Among other things, he has worked in silence as pastor and bishop for more than 30 years and helped with the new evangelization of Crypto-Armenians from Eastern Turkey, whose parents and grandparents had to convert to Islam during the time of the genocide.

When he was elected patriarch, he received 102 votes, while Aram Ateşyan received 16 votes from the bishops.

In the debate about the use of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, in June 2020 he made the proposal to transform the Hagia Sophia into a house of worship for Muslims and Christians.
