Istanbul ( Turkish İstanbul ) is a Turkish province in the north-west of the country, with the capital Istanbul . Its area is 5,343.02 km².

According to the 2009 census, the official population of Istanbul Province was 12,915,158, of which the city of İstanbul, whose territory is almost identical to that of Istanbul Province, had 12,782,960 inhabitants alone. In 2016, the population was already 14,804,116.

The province of Istanbul is bordered by the Tekirdağ Province to the west, the Kocaeli Province to the east, the Black Sea to the north and the Sea of Marmara to the south . The Bosporus divides the province into a European and an Asian side.

Buildings worth seeing in the province are included in the list of castles, fortresses and palaces in Istanbul .

Counties

Istanbul has been a major city since 1984 (Büyükşehir belediyesi). After an administrative reform in 2014, all districts are directly subordinate to the Lord Mayor of Istanbul. The former mayors of the municipalities ( Belediye ) were downgraded to the rank of Muhtar . Therefore, the 39 rural districts are also urban districts.

The province of Istanbul has 98 of the 600 members of the Turkish Parliament and is divided into three electoral districts, the first on the Asian side and the other two on the European side of the city.
