Career

Like a number of other good wrestlers, Said Scherifow Mustafov belonged to the Turkish minority in Bulgaria in the years after 1945 . He came to Olympic wrestling through oil wrestling and concentrated entirely on free style. He was almost 30 years old before his first successes on the international wrestling mat.

He made his first start in an international championship at the 1962 World Cup in Toledo (Ohio) . He came there in the light heavyweight division in 6th place after he had fought against the local hero Daniel Brand and lost against the Olympic champions Alexander Medwed from the USSR and Ismet Atli from Turkey .

At the 1963 World Cup in Sofia , Walko Kostov was preferred to him. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , however, he was back at the start and defeated there in the light heavyweight division a. a. Heinz Kiehl from the all-German team . He fought against Gholamreza Takhti from Iran and Ahmet Ayik from Turkey and lost again against Alexander Medwed. But these results were enough to make him a bronze medalist.

Also at the World Championships in 1965 in Manchester , 1966 in Toledo (Ohio) and 1967 in New Delhi , Said Mustafow won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division . The way to an even better result was blocked by Ahmet Ayik, Alexander Medwed and Schota Lomidze , USSR .

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , Said Mustafow just missed a medal with fourth place. There he defeated Daniel Vernik from Argentina and Jesse Lewis from the USA , came to a draw against Schota Lomidze and lost to Ahmet Ayik.

After the Olympic Games in 1968, Said Sherifov Mustafov resigned.
