Said Siam

Said Siam , also Seyam , Saeed or Sayed ( Arabic سعيد صيام, DMG Saʿīd Ṣiyām ; * July 22, 1959 in asch-Shati refugee camp , then Egypt ; † January 15, 2009 near Jabaliya ), was the Interior Minister of Hamas in the government of the Palestinian Authority from March 2006 . He was not a member of the March 2007 government of national unity, but was appointed to the cabinet of Khalid Maschal after the Hamas coup .

Life

Siam joined Hamas in 1987 and was one of the founders of its military arm and the Qassam Brigades . He was arrested four times by the Israeli army during the first Intifada between 1987 and 1993 and was temporarily expelled from Israel to southern Lebanon in 1992 .

From 1994 to 2000, Siam worked in the Palestinian Authority , but was still active in Hamas at the same time. He resigned from his post shortly after the outbreak of the second intifada . He was a former commander of the Qassam Brigades in Chan Yunis and represented Hamas as a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council from 2006 . In addition to its political activities, Siam worked as a teacher until 2003.

Siyam became a member of Hamas' close leadership in the Gaza Strip in 2004 after the killing of Akhmad Yassin and Abd al-Aziz Rantisi . Siam was the founder of the executive forces affiliated with Hamas, which played a key role in Hamas' takeover of power in the Gaza Strip in July 2007. After this coup, Siyam became interior minister in the government for the Gaza Strip formed by Hamas leaders.

Said Siam was killed in an Israeli air strike as part of Operation Cast Lead in his brother's house in Gaza City. His brother and one of his sons died along with Siam. (In total, Siyam had six children - two sons and four daughters.) The interior ministry's director of security, Saleh Abu Sharkh , and the local leader of the Hamas militia, Mahmud Abu Watfah , were also killed in the attack.
