Saint Martin ( Jèrriais : St Martîn) is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey . The municipality is located in the northeast of the island and covers 5716 vergées (10 km², 9% of the land area of Jersey) Historically, the municipality of Saint Martin le Vieux was called to delimit it from Grouville (historically Saint Martin de Grouville ). The community is used particularly for agriculture, but is increasingly in demand as a place to live.

Neighboring parishes are Trinity in the northwest, Saint Savior in the south and southwest, and Grouville in the south.

Sights and culture

The historic Mont Orgueil Castle still dominates the narrow harbor and port of Gorey ( Gorey Pier ) today , with most of Gorey itself being in the territory of the neighboring community of Grouville . Erected to defend the island, the castle lost its importance after the invention of long-range guns and cannons. Until Elizabeth Castle was built in the 17th century, it was the seat of the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey. After that, it served as a prison until a corresponding building was set up in St. Helier . The most famous prisoners include William Prynne (1600–1669) and John Lilburne (approx. 1614–1657).

The 600 meter long pier of the port of St. Catherine is all that is left of the project of a large and tide-independent port, which started but was never completed. Today it is mainly used by anglers as a popular fishing spot.

The Couperon and Faldouet dolmens are prehistoric monuments in the municipality. The La Pouquelaye de Faldouet dolmen are on the 10-pence piece of the States of Jersey and were the inspiration for the poem noun, numen, lumen , which Victor Hugo wrote in 1855 during his exile in Jersey.

The rock Le Saut Geffroy , or Geoffroy's Leap ( German  Geoffroy's jump ), is known as the place where executions were carried out in historical times , where those sentenced to death were thrown into the sea. According to folklore , a man named Geffroy was also pushed into the sea. However, he survived this jump and climbed ashore. While some saw this as a pardon , others felt that the execution had not been properly carried out. To demonstrate his ability, Geffroy jumped off the rock a second time, but died in the attempt. The Le Saut Geffroy is now by the National Trust for Jersey protected and preserved.

Several defense towers (including Archirondel Tower , Victoria Tower , Fliquet Tower ) are still in place. T. used as a shipping sign.

A special accent, the Faldouais , used to be spoken in St. Martin, has now died out, but has often found its expression in the literature of Jèrriais .
