Saint Mary ( Jèrriais : Sainte Mathie) is one of the twelve parishes on the Channel Island of Jersey . It is located in the northwest and has a land area of 3643 vergées (7 km², 5% of the land area of Jersey)
Saint Mary is bordered by four other parishes: Saint Ouen , Saint John , Saint Peter, and Saint Lawrence . The parish and its church of the same name derive their name from a medieval monastery that was probably destroyed during Viking invasions (8th and 10th centuries). In 1042 Duke Wilhelm gave "Saint Mary of the Burnt Monastery" to Cerisy Abbey .
geography
One of the natural sights of the municipality is the Devil's Hole , also known as Le Creux du vis or Spiral Cave , a blowhole in the cliffs of the coast. From the parking lot above the cliffs, a steep footpath leads down to two viewing platforms, which allow views of the crater-like hole and the cave entrance. The cave itself is not accessible.
On the border with Saint John is the Mourier Valley, whose watercourse once drove several mills.
La Grève de Lecq is on the border between Saint Mary and Saint Ouen. In the hamlet there are army barracks from Napoleonic times and a medieval watermill that was converted into a pub after the Second World War , the water wheel of which has been preserved to this day. On the eastern side of the bay is Le Castel de Lecq , a possibly Iron Age earthwork .
There is a shooting range in the municipality where the popular Jersey shooting with pistols and rifles can be practiced.
The subsoil of the community consists of coarse-grained granite ("Saint Mary's granite"), which was formed during the Paleozoic about 480 million years ago. This granite used to be mined as a building material for houses and buildings.
Vingtaines
The municipality is divided into Vingtaines for administrative purposes:
The community forms a constituency and elects a deputy ( Deputy ) for the island of Parliament .
All parishes in Jersey, including Saint Mary, have an honorary police force made up of voluntary members who have certain rights organized in a police-like manner.
