The Saint Mary River (short form: St. Mary River ) is an approximately 200 km long right tributary of the Oldman River in Montana (USA) and Alberta (Canada).

The Saint Mary River has its source in the Rocky Mountains in the US American Glacier National Park . Its headwaters are located on the southeast flank of Gunsight Mountain in the Lewis Range . The river flows through Gunsight Lake and Saint Mary Lake within the national park. Then it flows through the Lower Saint Mary Lake , into which the Swiftcurrent Creek flows from the west . Below the lake is a drainage dam on which part of the river water is diverted to the North Fork Milk River , a tributary of the Milk River , for irrigation purposes . The river flows in a predominantly north-northeast direction through the Great Plains . He crosses the border into Canada. 45 km southwest of Lethbridge , the Saint Mary River is dammed to form the 37.5 km² St. Mary Reservoir . Finally, 10 km southwest of Lethbridge, the river flows into the Oldman River, the right source river of the South Saskatchewan River .

A rock formation with dinosaur skeleton finds, the St. Mary River Formation , was named after the river.
