Saint Tudwal's Islands ( Welsh Ynysoedd Tudwal ) are a small group of islands south of Abersoch off the Lleyn Peninsula in North Wales , at the western end of Tremadog Bay . In the 19th century they were known as Studwells .

Surname

The name of the islands is derived from the saint Tugdual , who is said to have lived on the islands.

geography

The archipelago consists of two main islands

  • Saint Tudwal's Island West ( Welsh Ynys Tudwal Fawr , )
  • Saint Tudwal's Island East ( Welsh Ynys Tudwal Fach , )
  • and the Carreg y Trai rock ( ).

The islands are offshoots of a headland near Bwlchtocyn , a district of Pwllheli . They are about 1 km off the coast. The closest settlement is Machroes and excursion boats leave from Abersoch.

Saint Tudwal's Island West

Saint Tudwal's Island West is also the southernmost of the islands. It is quite elongated and extends from north to south. It is approx. 500 m long and 100 m wide. The island was only bought a few years ago by the adventurer Bear Grylls and converted into a holiday home. St Tudwal's Lighthouse is located on the island, which is 144 ft (44 m) above sea level . Grylls had several problems with environmentalists. An investigation by the Gwynedd Council was due to take place on August 22, 2013 after Grylls had installed a slide into the sea.

Saint Tudwal's Island East

Saint Tudwal's Island East is kidney-shaped (almost rectangular) and is further north. It belonged to the writer Carla Lane until her death in 2016 . On the island there are the remains of a priory ( monastery ), which first appeared in tax lists in 1291. This monastery is said to have arisen from the original hermitage of St. Tugdual. The island rises to 125 ft (38 m), is approximately 500 m long and 200 m wide, and is grassy.

fauna

The islands are known for their seal colonies and many dolphins live in the surrounding, fish-rich waters .
