Life

Ansgar Wucherpfennig studied philosophy and Catholic theology from 1986 to 1991 at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main and the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . He completed the novitiate of the Jesuit order in Münster from 1991 to 1993. In 1993/94 he was active in youth work and religious instruction at the Canisius College in Berlin .

After a Licentiate in Biblical Studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome , he received the 1997 ordination . After completing his doctoral studies from 1996 to 2001 at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , he received his thesis “ Heracleon Philologus . Gnostic Exegesis of John in the Second Century "to the Dr. theol. PhD. From 2002 to 2004 he held a teaching position for the exegesis of the New Testament at the PTH Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt, where he taught from 2004 to 2008 as a lecturer for the subject Introduction and Exegesis of the New Testament. As a guest lecturer in 2006 at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, he gave the lecture Reading Matthew 1–2 within its Old Testament and Contemporary Jewish Background . From 2004 to 2007 he completed his habilitation at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .

In 2008 he received a call on the Chair of New Testament exegesis at the Philosophical-Theological University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt. As a guest lecturer in 2009 at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, he gave the lecture Davide e Gesù: L'uso dei Salmi nel Vangelo di Giovanni .

From 2014 to 2020 he was the rector of the PTH Sankt Georgen. In February 2018, Wucherpfennig was re-elected for a third two-year term. On October 7, 2018, it became known that the Vatican's Congregation for Education refused to grant him permission (' nihil obstat ') to take up this term on October 1, 2018. She called for a public revocation of certain positions on homosexuality , the blessing of same-sex couples and the women's diaconate . The reason is an interview that Wucherpfennig gave to the Frankfurter Neue Presse (FNP) in October 2016 . The Bishop of Limburg Georg Bätzing and Provincial Johannes Siebner advocated another term of office. The Frankfurt city dean Johannes zu Eltz and the canon lawyer Thomas Schüller expressed incomprehension about the actions of Rome. In addition to various other academic institutions, the Catholic Theological Faculty Day , the Working Groups for Catholic Theology , the German Section of the European Society for Catholic Theology and the Forum of Catholic Theologians published a joint declaration on the Wucherpfennig cause. On November 15, 2018 it became known that the Vatican had granted usury pfennig the 'nihil obstat' and that Wucherpfennig was therefore able to continue to hold the office of rector of the Sankt Georgen University of Applied Sciences.

With eight other personalities - theologians and well-known Catholics - he addressed an open letter to Cardinal Reinhard Marx , which was published on February 3, 2019 in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung . The signatories called for a "new start with sexual morality" with a "reasonable and fair assessment of homosexuality", "real separation of powers" in the church and the removal of the excesses of the ordination office and its opening up to women. They appealed to the German Bishops' Conference to give diocesan priests the freedom to choose their way of life, "so that celibacy can again credibly refer to the kingdom of heaven".
