Shimon Sakaguchi ( Japanese 坂 口 志 文 Sakaguchi Shimon ; born January 19, 1951 in Nagahama ) is a Japanese immunologist at Osaka University . He is best known for discovering regulatory T cells , describing their role in the immune system, and applying these findings in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and cancer .

Life

Sakaguchi earned an MD in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1982. , both at Kyoto University . Here he also received his further training in pathology and immunology . He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University . In 1989 he received his first professorship (assistant professor) at the Scripps Research Institute , but went back to Japan in 1991, where he first conducted research at RIKEN and then took over the management of the Department of Immunopathology at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute .

In 1999 he was appointed professor of experimental pathology at the University of Kyoto, and in 2007 he became head of the Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences. In 2011 he became a professor at the Immunology Frontier Research Center at Osaka University , which he now heads.

Thomson Reuters has been one of the favorites for a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine since 2015 .
