Salem is a village in the Town of Salem in Washington County . It belongs to the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area . At the 2010 census , the village had 946 inhabitants.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has an area of ​​7.6  km² , which is composed entirely of land.

The New York State Route 22 runs as Main Street through the village and intersects County Roads 30 and 153 here. The East Beaver Brook flows through the western part of the village.

The village is located in the northern part of the town in whose area it is located. Part of the county’s administration used to be located here, including the prison and the sheriff’s office. The former courthouse has been preserved as a sight. It was designed by EF Cummings in 1869 and was used as a county jail until 2004. The sheriff's office was relocated and a branch was built in 2007 south of the village on Route 22.

history

The village was founded in 1762 by settlers from New England and Scotland . At that time the area was still part of Albany County . It initially had two names, White Creek and New Perth , which two different groups of settlers wanted to establish. Eventually the New York government decided on the name.

Salem's Downtown was declared a Historic District in 1975 and added to the National Register of Historic Places .

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Salem was inhabited by 964 people. The population density was 127.0 people per km ². There were 412 housing units at an average 54.3 per km ². The Salem population was 97.61% White , 1.14% Black or African American , 0.10% Native American , 0% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.10% said they were of other races and 1, 04% named two or more races. 0.62% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Salem were distributed to 363 households out of which 34.4% had children under 18 years of age. 51.0% of households were married, 14.0% had a female head of the household without a husband and 29.2% were not families. 25.9% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.7% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.98.

The population was divided into 26.3% minors, 7.8% 18–24 year olds, 27.5% 25–44 year olds, 23.3% 45–64 year olds and 15.0% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 women there were 101.3 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 91.9 men.

The median household income in Salem was 37,357 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 44,375 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 31,625 compared to $ 23,500 for women. 4.5% of the population and 4.2% of families had an income below the poverty line , of which 4.5% of minors and 4.3% of those aged 65 and over were affected.
