Life

Salifou Fatimata Bazèye studied at the École nationale de la magistrature in France . In Niger she worked as General Procurator , then as a substitute and assessor of the President of the Chamber of Financial Control . In 2005 she was appointed as a judge at the Niger Supreme Court. It successfully resisted pressure from Prime Minister Hama Amadou's government to transfer striking judges. However, in 2007 the government accepted her nomination for one of the seats reserved for lawyers in the Constitutional Court. The Constitutional Court elected her as its president.

When President Mamadou Tandja tried to get a third term in office in 2009, contrary to the current constitution, he found a vehement opponent in Salifou Fatimata Bazèye. Under their chairmanship, the Constitutional Court passed two unanimous judgments against Tandja's plans. The first, non-binding decision on May 8, 2009 was in connection with the preparation of a motion of censure by the National Assembly against the President for high treason . The second decision, dated June 12, 2009, was binding: the Constitutional Court annulled a presidential decree convening an electoral college for the constitutional referendum on August 4, 2009 , with which Mamadou Tandja wanted to amend the constitution in his favor. Tandja put pressure on the Constitutional Court in vain to revoke its decision. When this didn't work, he dissolved the Constitutional Court without an appropriate legal basis. The resulting constitutional crisis severely undermined the legitimacy of his rule. Tandja was overthrown in February 2010. The Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy appointed Salifou Fatimata Bazèye President of the Constitutional Council, which created the legal framework for the return to a democratically legitimized order, which was concluded with the presidential elections on January 31, 2011 .

Salifou Fatimata Bazèye is married to a senior tax official and has several children.
