Salman Akhtar

Salman Akhtar (born July 31, 1946 in Khairabad , then United Provinces in British India , now Uttar Pradesh ) is an Indian-American psychoanalyst , author and professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia .

Life

Akhtar was born into a Muslim family in Khairabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. He is related to Jan Nisar Akhtar, a Bollywood film songwriter and Urdu poet, and the singer, teacher and writer Safia Akhtar. He is the brother of the poet and film writer Javed Akhtar . His son, Kabir Akhtar, is an American television director who received an Emmy in 2016 .

After completing his MBBS degree from the Medical School of Aligarh Muslim University in India, he completed his internship at the Maulana Azad Medical College of the University of Delhi in India. He then received his PhD in psychiatry from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research at NN Wig.

In 1973 he moved to the United States and completed his internship and psychiatric training at the Medical Center of the University of Virginia. He then received psychoanalytic training at the Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Institute. He is currently Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Jefferson Medical College and a psychiatrist at Jefferson University Hospital, and an instructor and therapist at the Psychoanalytic Center in Philadelphia.

He is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and the International Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies . His more than 300 publications also include 13 books. He is also a reviewer for the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and the International Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies . He has also published seven collections of poetry and is Scholar-in-Residence at the InterAct Theater Company in Philadelphia.
