The Sevan trout ( Salmo ischchan ) is a species of fish that is endemic to Lake Sevan in Armenia . The species is related to the European trout . In Armenia the species as is Ischchan (իշխան, iʃχɑn ), respectively.
The fish is classified as endangered due to the introduction of competitors in the Soviet era such as a Coregonus species , the goldfish and the Galician crayfish , and the sinking water level in Lake Sevan. On the other hand, the Sevan trout was successfully introduced in Issyk Kul in Kyrgyzstan .
Commercial fishing of Sevan trout has been prohibited by law since 1976, and two years later the trout was placed under protection as part of the Sevan National Park . Most Sevan trout these days are raised in fish hatcheries.
The Sevan trout has four subspecies that differ from one another based on their growth rate and spawning time and location.

- Salmo ischan aestivalis
- Salmo ischan Gegarkuni
- Salmo ischan danilewskii
Salmo ischan ischan is the largest subspecies and can grow up to 90 cm long and 15 kg. Salmo ischan aestivalis, on the other hand, is not even 50 cm long.
