The Salmon River (English for "Salmon River") is a 26 km long left tributary of the Klamath River in the northwest of the US state California . It drains an area of 1945 km².
The Salmon River arises at the confluence of its two headwaters, the North Fork and South Fork Salmon River at Forks of Salmon in Siskiyou County . It initially flows in a north-north-westerly direction through the Klamath Mountains . After the confluence of the 35 km long Wooley Creek (catchment area 385 km²) from the right, the Salmon River turns to the west and finally meets the Klamath River at the settlement Somes Bar . The Salmon River Road runs along the course of the river.
The North Fork Salmon River is the right source river of the Salmon River. It rises northeast of the English Peak . The river is 51 km long and drains an area of 528 km².
The South Fork Salmon River is the left headwaters of the Salmon River. Its source is between Sawtooth Ridge and Black Mountain . The catchment area of the 53 km long river covers 751 km².
Ecosystem
In the river system of the Salmon River, u. a. the following fish: silver salmon ( Oncorhynchus kisutch ), king salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha ), steelhead trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) and green sturgeon ( Acipenser medirostris ). In addition, the place lamprey Lampreta tridentata in the river.
The entire course of the Salmon River and its tributary Wooley Creek as well as the North Fork below the southern limit of the Marble Mountain Wilderness Area and the South Fork below the Cecilville Bridge are classified as National Wild and Scenic River .
