Life and work
Belmonte came from a Sephardic family that originally came from Madeira , but had been based in Hamburg since the 17th century . After graduating from the Johanneum School of Academics , he completed the academic high school in his hometown and then studied law in Berlin , Heidelberg and Göttingen .
In 1864 Belmonte returned to Hamburg and settled down as a criminal defense lawyer, but in addition to his legal work always worked as a businessman. After receiving his doctorate in law in Leipzig in 1865 , he joined the office of Edward Banks , who later became a national liberal member of the Reichstag. He also took over the management of the legal specialist publisher IF Richter . From 1873 to 1880 Belmonte was a member of the board of the Portuguese-Jewish community in Hamburg, which, in contrast to the German-Israelite community, maintained the Sephardic rite. In 1879 he was elected one of the three spokespersons for the Hamburg lawyers, whose task it was to present the problems that had arisen with the introduction of the Reich Justice Acts to the Hamburg judicial administration.
Belmonte was the publisher of the Hamburg journal Die Reform and, since 1885, of the specialist journal Das Tribunal , which dealt with the practical administration of criminal justice. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Hermann Heine Foundation . Belmonte died on March 19, 1888 from injuries sustained in a duel with the Hamburg wine merchant Fuchs. His grave is in the New Portuguese Cemetery Ilandkoppel (Ohlsdorf).
