Nusret Gökçe (also known as Salt Bae ; * 1983 in Erzurum , Turkey ) is a Kurdish-Turkish butcher , cook and restaurateur of the Nusr-Et restaurant chain .

He became an Internet phenomenon with worldwide attention with a video distributed on Instagram that shows him carving and salting a steak.

Life

Gökçe was born in 1983 in Paşalı , a village in the Şenkaya district of the Erzurum province , to Kurdish parents. His father was a miner . His family's financial situation forced him to drop out of school in the sixth grade and begin training as a butcher in Bostancı , Istanbul Province .

In 2007 he traveled to Latin and North America for three years , including Argentina and the United States , where he worked as a cook in restaurants without pay. After returning to Turkey, he and a partner opened the first Nusr-Et restaurant in Istanbul in 2010 . The Turkish Doğuş Holding , a conglomerate, joined the company in 2012. The D.ream gastro division was followed by openings in Istanbul, Ankara , Doha , Dubai , Abu Dhabi , Miami and New York .

"Ottoman Steak" video

Gökçe became known worldwide with the video Ottoman Steak , which he published on Twitter in January 2017 . It was distributed on Instagram and viewed millions of times. In the video he demonstrates the carving and salting of a steak with special movements, whereupon Salt Bae became his nickname .

In Instagram appearance of the restaurant Nusr-Et invites Gökçe publicity photos and videos that show him among other things, doing as celebrities entertained. He used his fame to open restaurants in the USA.
