Salvatore Cassisa

Salvatore Cassisa (born December 12, 1921 in Trapani ; † August 4, 2015 in Monreale ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Monreale .

Life

Salvatore Cassisa was ordained a priest on September 3, 1944 .

On December 1, 1973 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Cefalù . He received his episcopal ordination on January 24, 1974 from Salvatore Cardinal Pappalardo , Archbishop of Palermo . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Trapani , Francesco Ricceri , and the Archbishop of Monreale , Corrado Mingo .

Paul VI appointed him on March 11, 1978. to the Archbishop of Monreale. During his tenure, he was repeatedly accused of having ties to the Mafia without the authorities being able to prove anything to Cassisa. On May 24, 1997, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation because of his age. In 2003 he was convicted of fraud in the first instance, but was later acquitted.

He was the Grand Prior of the Sicilian Lieutenancy of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
