Salvatorkirche (Weißbach)

The Evangelical Salvatorkirche is a late Gothic church in the district of Weißbach of the municipality of Langenweißbach in the district of Zwickau in Saxony . It belongs to the Salvatorkirchgemeinde Langenweißbach in the parish of Marienberg of the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church of Saxony and is particularly known for the valuable late Gothic altar.

History and architecture

The Salvatorkirche Weißbach is a stately late Gothic hall church, which was built in the years 1515/16. After a renovation in the years 1692–94, it was restored in 1895 by Oskar Mothes . In 1992/93 the exterior was restored with the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection , with sandstone work on the windows and door frames, the production of leaded glass windows and roofing work on the nave and entrance being carried out.

The church is a plastered structure with a three-sided closed choir, buttresses and tracery windows. A west tower with a square floor plan with an octagonal bell storey with a baroque tail hood and lantern accentuates the exterior. A late Gothic gate is located on the north side of the tower.

The interior of the hall is completed by a painted field ceiling with scenes from the Old and New Testaments from 1747. Two-storey galleries are built into the west and north sides, the parapets of which were painted in 1753 with scenes from the life of Christ.

Furnishing

The main piece of equipment is a magnificent, large carved altar by Peter Breuer , which he created in 1518–20 as a major work of his late period. In the predella the holy clan is depicted, in the shrine Christ the Triumphator and Saints Aegidius and Quirinus , in the wings Petrus and Laurentius as well as Sebastian and Thomas. Painted representations of Wolfgang , John the Baptist , Hieronymus and Christophorus can be found in the change. In conversation Enge a is crescent Madonna with Barbara and Catherine arranged. A restoration of the original version of the altar until 2016 was funded by the German Foundation for Monument Protection .

The sandstone baptism with tracery was made around 1500 and shows a baroque lid with Christ and the children. Similar baptisms have been preserved in various churches in the Zwickau district.

The artistically significant sandstone pulpit from 1693 is carried by Peter and shows reliefs with Christ and the evangelists in the blind arches. The wooden sound cover is decorated with an angel. Next to it is a large wooden crucifix from 1695.

Two unmounted carved figures can be seen on the gallery pillars, a holy bishop and probably Saint George from around 1500. A sacrament niche in the sacristy probably dates from around 1515. Also noteworthy are the life-size, composite woodcuts by Luther and Melanchthon from Early 16th century. The organ was made by Eule Orgelbau Bautzen in 1876.
