Salvijus Berčys (born September 8, 1989 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian chess player who has been playing for the US Chess Federation since 2003 .

Life

Salvijus Berčys began playing chess at the age of six in his aunt's house. He was trained by the international master Algirdas Bandza and the FIDE master Risardas Fichmanas. He learned opening theory, especially in the King's Indian Defense , from FM Donatas Lapienis . He played club chess in Lithuania for the Vilnius Chess Club and in the United States Chess League from 2009 to 2011 for Dallas Destiny .

At the U14 World Cup in 2002 in Heraklion Berčys reached a shared third place. He also shared a third place in the semifinals of the Lithuanian individual championship in 2003 in Vilnius , which he qualified for the Lithuanian championship in Alytus , where he was last. When Salvijus Bercys moved to the United States in June 2003 at the age of 13, he had an Elo rating of 2255. Similar to today's chess grandmaster Alex Lenderman of the same age and today's grandmaster Robert L. Hess two years younger , he went to Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn , where chess is promoted. In 2003 he won the US Open Junior Championship in New York . With this victory he won a four-year scholarship from the University of Texas at Dallas , where he is now studying. In 2006 he won the New York August Open .

Salvijus Berčys has held the title of International Master since January 2007. He achieved the standards for this at the 2004 World Open in Philadelphia , at the 2005 US Individual Championship in San Diego and at the 2006 World Open . His current Elo rating is 2447 (as of July 2014), but he is listed as inactive because he has not played a rated game since the 2013 Final 4 of College Chess held in Rockville, Maryland in April 2013 . Berčys achieved his highest rating ever of 2487 in July 2011.
