history
The company was founded in 1850 by Carlo Salvioni (1827-?) As a printing company on the Piazza Teatro in Bellinzona. Carlo Salvioni's son of the same name (1858–1920), who left Ticino at an early age, later became an important linguist and was the author of numerous books. However, he was not actively involved in his father's company.
As early as the 19th century, the printing activities gave rise to the first publishing activities. The first regularly published publications include, for example, the decision collection of the Ticino courts, which appeared for the first time in 1866 and a total of 133 times a year up to the year 2000, or the “Bollettino storico della Svizzera italiana”, first published in 1879 on the initiative of the historical researcher Emilio Motta and still published twice a year ". Emilio Motta's “Bibliografia del suicidio” from 1890, the first real bibliography of suicide with 647 references mainly from Italy, or “I monumenti artistici del Medio Evo nel Cantone Ticino” written in 1894 by the art researcher Johann Rudolf Rahn , are among the first books of importance “, Which dealt with medieval works of art in the canton of Ticino.
After the turn of the century, Salvioni intensified the publication of books and subsequently made a name for himself in Ticino with important publications, but also throughout Switzerland with books on the subject of Ticino. Some books and publications from this period, such as the collections and bulletins mentioned above, can still be found in Swiss university libraries today.
Under the direction of Arturo Salvioni, who took over the family business in its second generation, was established in 1920, based near a new headquarters and the activities of the then as a general partnership further expanded operating under the name "Arturo Salvioni & Co" company. With the takeover by the third generation, a partnership with the Gabuzzi family was established in the 1930s. This was further consolidated under the management of the fourth generation, which in 1954 led to the conversion into a jointly managed stock corporation and the renaming to "Salvioni SA". In 1993 Giacomo Salvioni, who is also the editor of the newspaper laRegione , took over all third-party shares.
In the meantime, the publisher has published numerous other works, not least in the field of art literature. As early as 1936, the Ticino art historian Ugo Donati , who was living in Rome at the time, published a history of Ticino artists at Salvioni under the title “Breve storia degli artisti ticinesi”. This was followed in 1942, also by Salvioni, by the volume “Artisti ticinesi a Roma” written by Ugo Donati on behalf of the Canton of Ticino, which also became a reference work for later art-historical research. In 1958 Salvioni published a biography about Carlo Salvioni jun., Whose works as a linguist, with very few exceptions, were never published by the family publishing house.
In the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, the publishing house published numerous other books. Ticino in all its aspects is still the central theme of the publishing program today.
