Salt pond (Bavaria)
Salt pond

The salt pond is an artificially created small reservoir and is located in the state forest of the Fichtelgebirge east of Warmensteinach (district Fleckl) in the district of Bayreuth . It is fed by the upper reaches of the Warme Steinach river , which rises on the southeast slope of the Ochsenkopf .

Surname

The name is a mystery because there was no salt deposit in the Fichtel Mountains. As can be seen in a travel description published in Erlangen in 1791, there have actually been attempts to dig for salt in the Seelohe near Fichtelsee . Despite years of searching, nothing had been found and all costs had been spent in vain. Perhaps excavation attempts were also made in the vicinity of the salt pond, from which the body of water got its name.

Mining

There is reliable evidence that mining on iron mica took place in the salt pond. The ore, which occurs in scaly or large-leaved form and with crooked skins and is bound to quartz veins, was found on Gleißingerfels near Fichtelberg , near Grassemann , in Geyersberg and near Fleckl, districts of the municipality of Warmensteinach. It appeared in streaks that were half a meter to four meters thick at the minable areas. Even today you can find pieces of quartz with iron mica around the salt pond.
