Sam Livesey

Samuel "Sam" Livesey (born October 14, 1873 in Flintshire , Wales , United Kingdom , † November 7, 1936 in London ) was a British theater and film actor .

Live and act

Livesey's father Thomas, originally a railroad worker, had run a small touring company on stage in the late Victorian era, and so Samuel Livesey grew up living and working in the theater. Hardly school age, Sam appeared on stage. As one of six children, he supported the mother, who had been widowed since 1893, in her efforts to set up and play a permanent stage, the Prince of Wales Theater, in Mexborough . Nevertheless, the family continued to tour. Born in Welsh, and married to an actress since 1900, he had had a little sensational stage career when he received offers from film in the middle of the First World War .

Livesey played with supporting roles in mostly dramatic stories. Several times he embodied soldiers of middle officer rank (captains in The Lifeguardsman and Victory and Peace , majors in Insult and Dark Business ). The transition from silent to talkies meant no problems for him. In one of the most important British films of the 1930s, Alexander Korda's prestigious historical portrait The Private Life of Henry VIII , Livesey played the executioner in the service of His Majesty. In 1936, the year he died, he also appeared in Korda's next prestige film, Rembrandt . As before, Charles Laughton was Livesey's film partner. Sam Livesey's last two films ( Gypsy Princess, Dark Shops ) hit UK theaters three months after his death.

Until recently, Sam Livesey remained loyal to the stage. a. in the plays Bulldog Drummond, The Runaways and Father of Lies . The actor Jack Livesey (1901–1961) emerged from his marriage to his wife Margaret Ann, who died in 1913 . Roger Livesey was Sam's nephew, whom he later adopted.
