Bibi Lindström

Birgit "Bibi" Lindström (born June 30, 1904 in Arbrå , Sweden ; † November 4, 1984 in Stockholm ) was a versatile Swedish artist who had worked as an architect , set designer , painter and film architect . With an oeuvre of sets for around 150 cinema and television films in four decades, it was considered extremely productive.

Live and act

Bibi Lindström received her first artistic and architectural training in 1922/23 at the Munich training workshops and then, from 1923 to 1926, at the Technical University in Stockholm . In 1926 she enrolled at the Royal Academy of Art (Kungliga Konsthögskolan) and concentrated on the decorative arts. Already here Lindström's great technical skills crystallized, and she was given a scholarship for study trips to Germany, Italy and France . She then gained practical experience in the field of stage design (1931/32) at Gösta Ekmans Theater. Together with the Swedish architect Viking Göransson (1900–1985), whom she married in 1929 (divorced in 1953), Bibi Lindström took part in the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930 , an important exhibition for architecture, design and handicrafts under the sign of modernism. In 1938 she took part in another art exhibition, this time in New York City , where she was awarded a prize. She then stayed in the American metropolis for a while and took over follow-up offers. In later years, too, Lindström repeatedly went on excursions into non-film art directions; For example, she created several oil paintings and fabric samples for furniture.

Shortly after the start of the sound film age in Sweden in the early 1930s, Bibi Lindström could be won over for the film. As a film architect, from then on she designed the buildings for an abundance of initially quite low-quality entertainment productions and worked in her four decades-long creative period with the most famous directors in her country, including Schamyl Bauman , Olof Molander , Rolf Husberg , Hasse Ekman , Alf Sjöberg and, again and again, Arne Mattsson , whose (because of a brief nude scene) critically acclaimed film scandal love story She danced just one summer also outfitted her. Bibi Lindström also provided the backdrop designs for some of the works by star director Ingmar Bergman ( Evening of Jugglers , Nahe dem Leben , Persona ) and for Sjöberg's celebrated Stindberg adaptation, Miss Julie . In later years she designed several sets for television and also went on trips to the theater as a set designer (including The Teahouse of the August Moon , 1954, Mary Mary , 1963, Barefoot in the Park , 1965). At almost 70 years of age, the doyenne withdrew into private life under Sweden's film architects.
