Sam Parkins
Leroy "Sam" Parkins (born September 23, 1926 in Boston , † November 18, 2009 in Tel Aviv ) was an American jazz musician ( clarinet , saxophone , flute , vocals ) and music producer .

Sam Parkins began his music career in Massachusetts, where he studied at the New England Conservatory since 1950 . He first played R&B and Bebop with Dick Twardzik , Dick Wetmore and Al Walcott . Since 1954 he was part of the Excalibur Jazz Band , with whom he performed Dixieland ; In 1955 he played in the Sunset Inn Orchestra , with which the first recordings were made. From 1956 he worked in New York; there he appeared with Dick Cary , Kenny Davern , Dick Wellstood . In 1960 he recorded his debut album ( Leroy Parkins and His Yazoo River Jazz Band ) for Bethlehem Records , which included Johnny Letman , Dicky Wells , Dick Wellstood, Danny Barker , Ahmed Abdul-Malik and Manzie Johnson. In the following years he played traditional jazz a. a. with Meg Welles , Marty Grosz , in the 1970s with Max Morath and Petr Dean . In the field of jazz he was involved in 15 recording sessions between 1955 and 1981. From the 1970s he worked as a producer for New World Records ; four of the records he produced were nominated for a Grammy .
