Samica is a multilingual and interdisciplinary scientific book series published at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg since 2014 with articles on the languages, literatures and cultures in Sápmi . The editors are the literary scholar Thomas Mohnike at the University of Strasbourg and the linguists Michael Rießler and Joshua Wilbur at the University of Freiburg.

History and profile

Samica, volume 2

The book series was founded in 2014 as the successor to the Small Saami Scriptures . Like her predecessor, Samica addresses an audience interested in a wide range of topics related to Sami studies . The series contains articles on Saami languages ​​and literatures and on Saami cultural studies as well as teaching materials and literary texts in the original or in translation. The equipment of the series as well as the logo was created by the designer Philipp von Rohden ; as typeface is Skolar the designer David Březina used.

The series is financially supported by the Nordic countries (e.g. FILI and NORLA ), editorially by staff in Freiburg and Strasbourg as well as their authors and translators.

The editors of the volumes published so far are partly identical to the series editors or were published in collaboration with external authors and translators. Volume 1 ( Greetings from Lapland ) is the German translation of a text by Nils-Aslak Valkeapää and had its premiere in connection with Finland's official appearance as the guest country at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2014. Volume 4 ( words disappear / fly / to the blue light ) is an anthology Sami poetry between tradition and modernity in German translation and the parallel original texts. Volume 5 ( Johan Turi ) is the German translation by Harald Gaskis and Gunnar H. Gjengset's drama about the life of Johan Turi , which will be performed by Beaivváš Sámi Našunálateáhter in Frankfurt as part of the HOUSE OF NORWAY art exhibition in autumn 2019 . Both books were presented as part of Norway's official appearance as the guest country at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2019.

While the books above represent literary texts, Volume 2 ( Pitesamisk ordbok ) is a contribution to language planning for Pitesamish in Norway and Sweden, and indeed helped this extremely small and critically endangered language to be officially recognized as a written language.
