Samiopoula ( Greek Σαμιοπούλα [ samjɔˈpula ] ( f. Sg. )) Is an island about one square kilometer about 900 meters south of the island of Samos . It has been administered since 1918 by the village of Spatharei in the municipality of Pythagorio on the island of Samos. The highest point reaches 153.2 meters.

History and geography

The Ottoman cartographer Piri Reis called it Arkoudonisi ("Bear Island") on a map from 1520 . The French explorer Tournefort also mentions the island in 1702. In the small settlement are the churches of Agia Pelagia (Αγία Πελαγία), which was mentioned in documents from 1789, and Analipsi tou Sotiros (Αναλήψη του Σωτήρος) from 1793. The remains of buildings are nearby were probably former monks' dwellings. Both churches belonged to the Megali Panagia monastery (Μεγάλη Παναγία) founded in 1586 near the village of Koumaradei on Samos. In 1957 the island was leased. Descendants of the then tenant still live on the island today.

There is low shrub vegetation on the island . Otherwise, few olive , fig , almond and carob trees grow . The residents cultivate a small piece of land for their own use, and they also keep a few goats. The winter precipitation is collected in cisterns . The aim is to supply the island with solar power using a photovoltaic system .

During the summer months, bathing trips from Pythagorio and Ormos Marathokambou to the only beach Psalida (Ψαλίδα) are offered. A small tavern and overnight accommodation are available. The small bay of Katsakas (Κατσακάς) is an anchorage and also offers sailboats protection against the prevailing winds from the north-northwest.
