Lachmund's interest in collectors was aroused at the age of ten when he was given an album with postcards . He started collecting historical photographs and postcards with motifs from Hamburg at an early age . He completed an apprenticeship as a painter and attended trade school. In 1930 he received a scholarship that enabled him to attend the arts and crafts school at Lerchenfeld for four semesters . During this time he began to draw and photograph cityscapes himself. Lachmund's entire collection was destroyed by bombing raids on Hamburg in World War II in 1943, which at that time consisted of around 8,000 photographs, several thousand postcards, watercolors and drawings.

After the end of the war, Lachmund returned to Hamburg from British captivity in autumn 1945 and began collecting again in the same year. He also started giving lectures and organizing exhibitions. In 1962 Lachmund published his first book at the time of the imperial era and after two years the volume Alt-Altona appeared . Further publications on the history of Hamburg and the history of photography followed.

He archived around 40,000 postcards and 20,000 photographs, including rare calotypes by the photographer Charles Fuchs from the period before 1860. There were also around 150,000 motifs from newspapers, magazines and books. Lachmund's collection was one of the most important picture collections in Hamburg and was sold after his death.
