Scharpff Collection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Scharpff Collection is a collection of contemporary art that was built up by the couple Rudolf († 2019) and Ute Scharpff from the 1960s.

Initially, the focus was on the Nouveaux Réalistes , American graffiti painting and socially critical American art. Later, the focus of the collection was placed on painting . Today the collection includes groups of works by internationally renowned artists from Germany ( Albert Oehlen , André Butzer , Neo Rauch and others), America ( Christopher Wool , Julian Schnabel and others) and England ( Bridget Riley , Glenn Brown , Rebecca Warren ).

Carolin Scharpff-Striebich has been the second generation to manage it since 2004 . Through her participation, the so-called 'open depot' was created, in which the works of the collection are integrated. This enables five German museums - Hamburger Kunsthalle , Kunstmuseum Stuttgart , Kunstmuseum Bonn , Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and Kunsthalle Mannheim - to work with the holdings of the collection according to their own ideas and wishes on the basis of a cooperation agreement.
