Samuel Edels (Maharscha)

Samuel Edels ( Samuel Elieser b. Juda Edels ; * 1555 in Cracow ; died 1631 in Ostrog ) was a Jewish scholar, Talmud commentator and rabbi in Lublin and Ostrog. He is also known as the Maharscha . It is an acronym of the Hebrew מהרש"א, which means: "Our teacher, the Rabbi Samuel Edels".

His parents came from respected rabbinical families. The father Yehuda was a well-known Talmudist and his mother was a cousin of the famous Maharal of Prague . As a young man he moved to Posen, where he married the daughter of Moses Ashkenazi Heilpern . He held a position as a rabbi in Chelm . In 1614 he became rabbi in Lublin and in 1625 in Ostrog, where he founded a large yeshiva . At a rabbinical meeting in Lublin in 1590, Samuel Edels signed a herem against the purchase of rabbinical posts. Samuel Edels Chiddushei Halachot are analytical commentaries on the Talmud , on Talmud commentaries ( Tosafot ) and on the commentaries of Shlomo Jizchaki . His Talmudic commentaries are among the classics of Talmudic literature, are highly regarded and are included in almost all Talmudic editions.
