Samuel Friedrich Diez
Samuel Friedrich Diez (born December 19, 1803 in Neuhaus am Rennweg , Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen , HRR ; † March 11, 1873 in Meiningen , Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen, German Empire ) was court painter and councilor in Meiningen, the capital and residence of Saxony-Meiningen .
Life
Samuel Friedrich Diez's father Jakob Diez was a bailiff in Neuhaus. His artistic inclinations were recognized early on and after graduating from the Casimirianum grammar school in Coburg , he joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1824 . This shows his talent for portraits, so that he was appointed to Meiningen by Duke Bernhard II of Saxony-Meiningen in 1832 . In 1833 the duke officially appointed him court painter. His pictures quickly gained fame in a wide area, he also painted at the royal courts of Coburg, Gotha, Weimar, Reuss and Munich, but also at the courts in Brussels, Paris, London, Stockholm and St. Petersburg. In 1853, King Leopold of Belgium appointed him design honoraire de Sa M. le Roi des Belges . In 1856 Diez founded the Marienverein, named after the Duchess Marie von Sachsen-Meiningen, who devoted himself to the beautification of the Meiningen area. In 1858, Diez was taken over by Prince Heinrich LXVII. Reuss appointed councilor. Together with the Meininger Künstlerklause, he created the image of the Virgin Mary in the Haßfurt Gorge in 1867 , a place of pilgrimage for the Catholic community in Meiningen.
In the last 10 years of his life he also devoted himself to genre and landscape painting. In 1873 Samuel Diez died of a heart condition.
The Diezhäuschen built in 1868 on the Bielstein, a lookout point over the town of Meiningen, is named after him. The Marienverein had the following slogan attached for its founder.

Samuel Friedrich Diez was married and had a daughter, Bianca. Sachse who also became a painter. One of her pictures hangs in the town church of Meiningen. The sculptor Robert Diez was his nephew.
