Gmelin initially wanted to marry Brigitta Kolb, but she died before the wedding. He married Sabine Knapp in Stuttgart on March 9, 1636, Katharina Hegel in Beuren on April 23, 1639 - daughter Johann Georg Hegel , with which Gmelin belonged to the Hegel family - and finally Eva Schleuß on August 9, 1653. Gmelin had a total of ten children, including the physician Johann Georg Gmelin .
