Samuel Hämmerli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Samuel Hämmerli the Elder (baptized June 25, 1750 in Lenzburg ; † October 19, 1820 there ; citizen of Lenzburg) was a Swiss cabinet maker .

Hämmerli came from a long-established Lenzburg table maker family. Nothing is known about his education, but based on his style one can assume that he visited centers of furniture art on his travels . His two sons Gottfried Hämmerli (born in 1775) and Samuel Hämmerli (born in 1778) also became cabinet makers. It is possible that they were trained by Christoph Hopfengärtner in Bern, because the furniture of the younger generation is under the influence of Hopfengärtner. Hämmerli's name and meaning as a cabinet maker have remained known locally, but it was forgotten that the name Samuel Hämmerli was based on father and sons. In his publication, Fritz Bohnenblust distinguished the groups of works of the two generations. So far, no furniture can be assigned by source. Only the wing doors of the Burghalde house in Lenzburg from 1793/94 are secured for Samuel Hämmerli .
