Samuel Heinrich Spiker (born December 24, 1786 in Berlin ; † May 25, 1858 ibid) was a Berlin journalist , travel writer and librarian .

Life

Spiker was the librarian of the Royal Library and from 1814, together with Friedrich Rühs, published the magazine for the latest history, national and ethnology . In 1827 he became editor of the high-circulation Berlinische Nachrichten von Staats- und schehrteachen , or Spenersche Zeitung for short .

He was also very musical, joined the Singakademie in 1807 and published some songs. He has also worked as a translator of English-language literature, including works by Shakespeare and Washington Irving .

His meeting with Ludwig van Beethoven , who gave Spiker a handwritten copy of his 9th symphony in Vienna on September 23, 1826 , which he gave to King Friedrich Wilhelm III, is significant . had dedicated. The copy is now in the possession of the Berlin State Library. Spiker left extensive memories of this encounter, at which Beethoven's publisher friend Tobias Haslinger accompanied him.
