Samuel Rosenbohm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Samuel Rosenbohm , also Rosenbomius , (born March 2, 1567 in Herzhorn , † 1624 or 1625 probably in Elmshorn ) was a German pastor and poet.

Live and act

Samuel Rosenbohm was most likely a son of Hinrich Rosenbohm from Stade († October 13, 1608). The father had worked as a deacon in Herzhorn since 1559, and as a pastor there from 1560.

Rosenbohm attended the Johanneum in Hamburg and enrolled in 1592 to study theology at the University of Rostock . He called himself "Neopedianus", by which he must have meant Neufeld in Herzhorn. In the summer of 1594 he moved to the University of Wittenberg and lived there with Wilhelm Alardus . At the university he met the poetics professor Friedrich Taubmann . After completing his studies, Rosenbohm worked as a deacon in Hemme in 1598 , in Wesselburen from 1601 and as a pastor in Elmshorn from 1617. Since his friend Henrich Hudemann wrote two poems on the occasion of his death in 1625, which can be found in the collection of poems Divitiae poeticae , he probably died this year or at the end of the previous year.

Works

In 1601 the most important neo-Latin named Paul Melissus Rosenbohm as a poet. Nevertheless, he probably lived in modest circumstances. His professor Taubmann asked him emphatically in 1603 to publish his youth poems, for which he apparently did not have enough money until 1612. His posthumously published poems only comprise one volume, although it is unclear whether there was insufficient money for further publications or whether there were not enough interested parties for neo-Latin poetry. Therefore, many of Rosenbohm's poems no longer exist today.

Rosenbohm was one of the poets of late humanism . He always wrote in Latin on secular subjects. There are hardly any references to his office as pastor. He saw the Calvinist Daniel Heinsius as his role model and ignored denominational boundaries. He tried to work lyrically and formally as perfectly as possible and stylistically elegant, and for this reason he always took up typical topics of the new Latin.

The printed works of Rosenbohm are epigrams and friendship poems, while no love poetry exists. The works hardly allow any conclusions to be drawn about the author's personality. The dedications show that he had contacts with Hamburg poets such as Werner Rolfinck , Johann von Wowern , Georg Ludwig Froben and Adam Tratziger and Holsteiners such as Alardus, Mauritius Rachel and Michael Clenovius . He dedicated other poems to important Dutch people, such as Heinsius as well as Justus Lipsius , Janus Dousa and Janus Gruter , whom he obviously did not know personally, but considered important figures in spiritual life. Due to the formal structure of his works, Rosenbohm was considered the most recognized poet of Holstein.

family

Rosenbohm married a daughter of Pastor Hartwig Lange from Hemme . The poet Paul Fleming mentioned in his Poemata that Rosenohm had a wife and children. Only the son Hinrich, who published his father's poems, is documented with certainty. In 1626 a Hartwig Rosenbohm enrolled at the University of Rostock, who was probably also a son of Rosenbohm.
