Samuel Wilhelm Oetter (born December 25 or 26, 1720 in Goldkronach ; † January 7, 1792 in Markt Erlbach ) was a Protestant theologian , heraldist , numismatist and historian .

Life

Oetter's father was Johann Heinrich Oetter, governor as well as councilor and mezger in Goldkronach. From the elementary school in Goldkronach, SW Oetter came to the seminar in Bayreuth and at the beginning of 1736 to the grammar school . When the University of Erlangen was inaugurated on April 3, 1743, Oetter was one of its first students. History had been his favorite subject since he was at school. The scientific meticulousness and attention to detail developed in his later writings is attributed to the relatively short stay at the university.

As early as 1744, when he was still studying in Erlangen, he was commissioned to provisionally hold the vice rectorate at the grammar school there , and on May 25 of the following year he was appointed vice rector himself. In 1745 he became vice rector at the grammar school in his place of birth, Goldkronach . As a Protestant clergyman, he was active in various places. In 1749 he became pastor in Linden , and in 1756 he was ennobled to the imperial court palatinate count . In 1762 he moved to Markt Erlbach, where he took up the position of pastor and became the historiographer of the Princely House of Ansbach . In 1767 he became a member of the Brandenburg-Bavarian Consistorial Council and in 1770 also a member of the Margravial Brandenburg-Ansbach Consistorial Council. Oetter was honored as a member of several societies for science and the arts, in 1763 he also became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He conducted extensive correspondence with academics and statesmen of all denominations. Among them was the royal Prussian state, war and cabinet minister, Count von Hertzberg , with whom he was in continuous correspondence for 37 years. After Oetter had contracted a troublesome stomach disease, he resigned from his pastoral office in 1789. His suffering is said to have been caused by sitting too long while studying and writing. He died three years later.

69 scientific publications are known of him; He also left numerous manuscripts that came into the possession of his eldest son, Friedrich Wilhelm Oetter (1754-1824). He published a biography of him (see below: Literature ), but did not comply with the public request to publish the letters from his father's correspondence.

Oetter was honored by the following companies by being appointed as a member:
