Samut Songkhram (in Thai สมุทรสงคราม ) is the capital of Mueang Samut Songkhram County ( Amphoe ) and Samut Songkhram Province . Samut Songkhram Province is located in the central region of Thailand .

history

From 1832 to 1833 Prince Kromakhun Itsaretrangsan (Chuthamani) built a fort at Samut Songkhram. In today's Tambon Bang Chakreng, a new, larger fort was built in 1848/49.

geography

Samut Songkhram is located in the western central region on the Mae Nam Mae Klong (Mae Klong River) , which also flows into the Gulf of Thailand here . The distance to the capital Bangkok is about 70 kilometers.

Economy and Transport

For centuries, the main product of the area has been salt, which is extracted from the many evaporation lakes. In addition, fruit , especially lychee, is harvested on the large plantations . Lobsters and other seafood are bred on the coast .

North of Samut Songkhram is Damnoen Saduak with one of the last remaining floating markets in Thailand. This market is already in the Ratchaburi province .

Samut Songkhram is connected to Thonburi in Bangkok via the Thonburi – Samut Songkhram railway, with the Tha Chin having to be crossed with a passenger ferry on this connection .
