San Antonio Marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The San Antonio Marathon (official name since 2008 Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon ) is a marathon in San Antonio that has been running since 1975.

history

The run was started in 1975 by Diego Vacca, a member of the YMCA , under the name Las Colonias de San Antonio Marathon , to promote fitness among the Mexican population of San Antonio.

In 1988, responsibility passed from the YMCA to an organizing committee established by the YMCA, the City of San Antonio, and the San Antonio Road Runners Club, and the race was renamed the San Antonio Marathon .

In 2008 the race was taken over by the Competitor Group and incorporated into its rock 'n' roll run series.

route

The start is at the intersection of South Alamo Street and East Market Street in central San Antonio. The course initially curves to the east and after three kilometers passes the Alamo . Then it's north to San Pedro Park. Return to the center via Main Avenue and turn a loop through the King William District. The course then turns south and passes the three Spanish mission stations Concepción, San José and San Juan Capistrano (where the southernmost point of the route is reached) on Mission Road . The last third of the route is mostly on Mission Road, which takes you back to the center, where you pass the Tower of the Americas after 40 km . The destination is at the Alamodome .

The half marathon course is identical to the first 17 and the last four kilometers of the marathon route.
